Goodman is useful for comparing different comfort levels without changing the manufacturer. Current GR families span single-stage, two-stage and modulating operation. The June 2026 Canadian price schedule also offers a rare manufacturer-origin equipment-price reference, provided it is not mistaken for an installed quotation.

Canadian evidence
Manufacturer Canadian brochure and Canada minimum-advertised-price schedule identify a Canadian offering.
Start with the furnace family, then the suffix
GR9S96 is the single-stage route, GR9T96 adds two-stage firing, GRVT96 combines two stages with a variable-speed blower, and GRVM97 is modulating. A salesperson describing all of them as a variable-speed high-efficiency furnace has not given enough information for a fair comparison. Burner staging and blower control are separate characteristics.
The linked specifications contain more detail than the catalog headlines. GRVT96 rows range from 96.1% to 97.5% AFUE, while the reviewed GR9S96 rows range from 95% to 97%. These are differences among actual capacities and revisions, not a claim that every unit earns the highest family rating.
What the Canadian equipment prices can tell you
The manufacturer links a Canada MAP workbook from its public pricing-policy page. MAP means minimum advertised price. It is neither the contractor’s acquisition cost nor a published turnkey installation price, and it is not a promise that equipment will be sold to a homeowner at that amount. The workbook identifies Canada but does not explicitly state a currency code in the examined table. Confirm currency before arithmetic.
This reference is most useful for detecting a mismatched comparison: an equipment-only advertised figure cannot fairly be compared with a quote that includes difficult vent routing, disposal, duct changes and commissioning. Conversely, calling every difference installation does not explain it; ask for the separate written work items.
A value comparison that remains accountable
Ask the dealer to show the exact high-fire and low-fire capacities beside the heat-loss calculation. If a lower-capacity model is proposed after insulation work, that is a question for a documented sizing review, not a reason to default to the old nameplate. Require the actual cabinet width because different blower packages can share a heating input.
Goodman’s own pricing guidance explains why it does not set an installed MSRP. Keep the model, installation design and labour warranty together when requesting alternatives. A cheaper quote with vague responsibility for startup or future callbacks may be a different product in practical terms, even when both quotations name the same furnace.
GRVM97 is the modulating Goodman family in the current reviewed catalog. It combines a variable-speed circulating blower with equipment-based ComfortBridge controls. The manufacturer specification distinguishes the upflow or horizontal GR model from the downflow GD model. A quote using the older GMVM97 name should not be assumed to describe the same generation.
GRVT96 is the two-stage variable-speed option and illustrates why an exact-model comparison is better than a broad efficiency label. The linked current technical table includes 96.1%,97% and 97.5% entries. A catalog headline saying up to 97.5% therefore describes the ceiling, not every cabinet and capacity.
GR9T96 is a two-stage furnace with selectable ECM blower speeds. It should not be described as equivalent to the GRVT96 variable-speed ComfortBridge package. Both may be reasonable candidates, but the meaningful comparison is their actual control and airflow arrangements rather than the shared96 family label.
GR9S96 is the single-stage current-generation Goodman family. Its full-model table is more informative than the 96 label: the reviewed rows range from 95% to 97% AFUE. A dealer should provide the exact rating for the selected size and cabinet, particularly if a rebate or energy-savings argument depends on an efficiency threshold.

Comparison basis
Manufacturer Canada MAP ranges in the June 2026 workbook: GR9S96 standard variants 2,449–3,609; GR9T96 2,533–3,681; GRVT96 3,270–4,684; GRVM97 3,945–5,375. These are workbook price figures, currency not explicitly labelled in the examined table. They are equipment advertising references, not installed Canadian-dollar quotes; confirm currency and current applicability.
A lower quotation does not establish lower reliability, and a stronger warranty slogan does not establish fewer breakdowns. Request local parts availability, labour charges after the installation warranty, and measured setup results rather than relying on brand anecdotes.
Evidence
Manufacturer specifications describe construction, controls and warranty terms. They do not supply comparable Canadian field-failure rates.
Limitations
No verified, model-controlled Canadian failure-rate dataset was found in this research. Warranty duration is not a reliability score.
