Understand the total price and the difference

Know which dollars buy equipment, which buy necessary work, and which buy additional support.

The answer in plain language

A higher price needs an explanation of what is different. A lower price needs a clear statement of what is included. Compare complete installed cash totals on the same tax basis, then examine the model, work, controls and labour warranty.

Read price ranges as context

A seller’s advertised range is a starting reference, not a quote for your house. Equipment-only pricing, minimum advertised equipment prices and installed quotations describe different things. The price guide identifies its examples and sources instead of assigning a fictional national installed price to every brand.

Ask whether the amount includes the selected capacity, control, delivery, removal, duct transitions, venting, condensate drainage, electrical changes and commissioning. Address permits or inspections where applicable to the work. A heading such as “installation included” does not resolve every possible site condition.

Connect the premium to the work

If one proposal adds a return-air correction, ask what finding supports it and whether the competing quote addresses the same issue. If a vent route changes, ask which materials and access work are included. If additional warranty labour is offered, ask who supplies that coverage and what it excludes.

Bungalow, two-storey and three-storey layouts can change access and air-distribution questions. Storey count itself is not an itemized charge. A straightforward basement exchange can be different from opening and restoring finished chases, even when both homes have three floors.

Use the price-gap tool

Enter two quoted totals and, if available, their documented component amounts. The tool shows the arithmetic and the unallocated part of the difference. Blank categories do not mean that work is free, and bundled amounts must not be counted twice.

Any planning estimate can change after a hands-on human appraisal. Ask for the changed scope and reason in writing before approving it. A large unexplained difference after aligning the proposals deserves an independent second opinion; the difference alone does not prove dishonesty.
