Understand rebates, assistance and financing
A rebate reduces an eligible cost; a loan creates a repayment obligation.
The answer in plain language
Verify assistance with the program operator before committing to equipment or counting money off the quote. A contractor’s estimate of a rebate is not an approval. Keep the full installed price, possible rebate and financing terms on separate lines.
Toronto HELP: a loan, not a free furnace
The City’s Home Energy Loan Program page was open to applications when checked on 11 October 2026. It lists financing up to $125,000 for eligible home-energy improvements, subject to approval. The published property criteria include qualifying Toronto low-rise homes, at most three storeys and six units, owner consent and other account/lender conditions.
The City describes repayment through the property-tax bill. Confirm the current rate, term, fees, eligible work and assessment requirements directly. Do not assume that “low-interest” means zero interest or that the program maximum is the amount your property will receive. Different project types can follow different assessment routes.
Ontario heat-pump assistance is a separate question
The Home Renovation Savings heat-pump stream describes eligibility for qualifying homes and equipment. A heat pump can operate with backup heat, but that does not establish that a standalone gas-furnace purchase receives the same rebate. Confirm the exact pairing, participant requirements and timing with the operator.
Ask what must happen before purchase or installation, who submits the application, what records are required and who bears the cost if eligibility is not met. Use the official program site rather than an advertisement or a screenshot as the final reference.
Compare the payment contract
A monthly payment does not reveal the complete cost. Request the cash price, deposit, annual interest rate, payment count, fees, total repayment and any end-of-term obligations. If the arrangement is a rental or lease, ask about ownership, buyout, cancellation and what happens when the home is sold.
A salesperson’s deadline should not replace a reviewable agreement. Save the applicable program terms and written offer with the quotation. Contact the program operator independently if a promised incentive is central to affordability or if someone pressures you to sign on its behalf.
