Ruud merits its own quotation review even where it shares a corporate family with Rheem. The Canadian catalog includes Ultra modulating models and Achiever staged models; the local dealer, exact equipment and written coverage determine whether a particular proposal offers good value.

Current Ruud Canada catalog lists reviewed gas-furnace families.
Read the model label carefully
Ruud’s Canadian site lists U98MV and U97MV for modulating furnaces, but also uses R951T and R962V on some product entries. Do not assume an initial R means that a quote is necessarily for a Rheem-labelled unit. Ask for the full supplied model, brand shown on the cabinet and its warranty document.
The U98MV is described for upflow installation, whereas U97MV is described for downflow or horizontal installation. A lower advertised efficiency on the latter should not be treated as evidence of a worse choice when the installation requires that arrangement. Orientation and documented output come before a prestige ranking.
Compare the upgrade actually being purchased
An R962V proposal introduces two-stage heating with a constant-CFM blower and EcoNet-related functionality. An R951T proposal emphasizes the simpler constant-torque arrangement. Ask whether the quoted thermostat and setup expose the functions being advertised, and which accessories are optional.
If a dealer presents a Ruud system as identical to another brand, request the documents that show the claimed equivalence. Common ownership does not itself prove matching parts, controls, warranty remedies or regional availability. A comparison should preserve those differences until they have been checked.
Use local support as a separate decision factor
Ask who services the unit if the installer stops trading, whether another nearby contractor can obtain parts, and what the labour policy covers. These are answerable local questions. A broad claim about a brand being dependable does not tell a household how quickly it can regain heat during a winter fault.
Keep the appraisal, quote revision and commissioning information in one customer-owned file. When a price differs substantially from another properly matched offer, ask both contractors to identify their exclusions and physical assumptions. An unexplained remaining difference warrants another human opinion; an automated price range should be used to prompt questions, not accuse a contractor.
U98MV is the upflow Ultra modulating Ruud family listed on the Canadian manufacturer site. It is the relevant Ruud comparison when a buyer is considering a premium modulating furnace, but its strongest feature label does not establish that it is necessary for every house.
U97MV is the downflow or horizontal Ultra option. It belongs beside other orientation-compatible modulating furnaces in a comparison, rather than being penalized simply because an upflow family advertises a higher maximum efficiency. Installation compatibility is a necessary first filter.
Ruud’s Canadian catalog uses R962V for its Achiever Plus two-stage family. That initial letter can confuse a buyer comparing Rheem and Ruud, so the quote should explicitly identify the cabinet brand and the warranty issuer. The reviewed page describes EcoNet capability and four-way multi-position installation.

Comparison basis
No manufacturer-issued Canadian turnkey installed price was verified. Obtain a local quote specifying the Ruud-labelled model and complete work. Any Rheem comparison should use matching scope rather than assuming the brands must sell at the same price.
The available manufacturer material does not provide a Canadian failure-rate comparison between Ruud, Rheem or other brands. Shared corporate ownership is not a reliability ranking, and the usefulness of a warranty depends on its remedy and service arrangements.
Evidence
Manufacturer specifications describe construction, controls and warranty terms. They do not supply comparable Canadian field-failure rates.
Limitations
No verified, model-controlled Canadian failure-rate dataset was found in this research. Warranty duration is not a reliability score.
