Furnace warranties: parts, labour and replacement promises
A warranty comparison begins with the Canadian certificate for the exact unit.
Identify the parties
The manufacturer may warrant a component while the installer separately warrants labour. A distributor may administer a claim. A third-party service agreement may have its own conditions. Ask who is legally responsible for each promise and retain the actual documents with the invoice and serial number.
“Lifetime heat exchanger” is not the same as lifetime free repair of the entire heating system. A component promise may exclude diagnosis, removal, installation labour, freight, refrigerant work or accessories. Unit-replacement provisions also vary by qualifying component, failure date and owner status. Read the terms rather than expanding a short marketing phrase.
Registration and ownership matter
Check registration deadlines, original-owner requirements, transferability and whether the offered coverage applies in Canada. Ask the installer who registers the unit and how you will receive confirmation. If a house is being sold or equipment is being installed in a rental, do not assume the homeowner terms apply unchanged.
Keep maintenance requirements and claim procedures accessible. A missing invoice or unclear service history can complicate a later claim. The point is not to assume a claim will fail; it is to remove ambiguity while the seller can still answer your questions.
Value the labour promise separately
A long parts term can coexist with a short labour term. Ask what you would pay for a covered part replacement in year three, including diagnostic charges, travel and after-hours service. Confirm whether the installing company or an independent agreement provides the labour protection.
Warranty length is not a measured failure rate. Two products with different terms cannot be ranked for reliability merely by counting years. Compare coverage, service access and the installed equipment independently, then decide whether an additional service agreement is worth its stated price and exclusions.
