Oil furnaces: compare the burner, venting and replacement options
The oil furnace is one part of an oil-heating installation.
Use the exact firing configuration
Oil furnace ratings can vary by firing rate and burner arrangement. Match the complete model and approved configuration to the published data. A broad family capacity range does not mean every installation can simply be adjusted to any number in that range.
Keep AFUE, heating output and physical dimensions separate. The proposed output should be related to a heat-loss assessment, while the cabinet and service clearances must fit the mechanical space. Ask the contractor to identify the technical sheet used for selection.
Include the rest of the system
The appraisal should address the fuel tank and lines, burner, vent or chimney, electrical supply, filter and air distribution. A furnace-only equipment price does not establish the cost of bringing the complete installation into the required condition.
If a proposal recommends replacing an oil system with another fuel or a heat pump, compare the full conversion scope. Include removal, electrical work, backup heat, controls and any changes to ducts. Do not compare a complete conversion with an equipment-only replacement.
Current sale and legacy support differ
Canadian oil-furnace labels have changed. The guide distinguishes documented new products from legacy brands and parts support. A registry record can help identify an existing unit even when new-sale availability is not established.
Ask who supplies the burner and furnace parts locally and who will maintain the selected configuration. Check any incentive directly with its current program operator before counting it in the net price. An older eligible-product list is not a promise of an open program or an approved application.
