Maytag PGC2TE-FS
PGC2TE-FS is the M1200 alternative for a buyer who wants two heat stages without treating variable-speed branding as mandatory.

A useful internal comparison
Maytag lists PGC2TE-FS separately from PGC2TE-VS. Both are presented at up to 96% AFUE and with two heat stages, while the blower descriptions differ. This creates a practical question: what additional benefit would the VS proposal deliver in this particular house, and at what installed premium?
Do not call the FS model an old-fashioned motor simply because of the wording. The current family literature refers to ECM technology; the exact selected revision should determine the motor description. Ask the contractor to provide the appropriate technical sheet rather than equating fixed speed with a particular motor construction.
Capacity and airflow still require assessment
Two-stage operation is a control feature, not a sizing method. Request the heating-load basis, full-output capacity and lower-stage capacity. Ask why that size was selected instead of the next smaller unit, especially if the answer initially centres on what the distributor has available.
The installer should also explain the proposed airflow through the filter, existing coil and ductwork. A furnace that meets the calculated heating requirement can still need a revised return-air arrangement. That work belongs in the comparison because it affects both price and resulting performance.
Make the lower-price option complete
An FS quotation should include the same essential venting, condensate, removal and commissioning scope as the VS quotation. A lower total produced by leaving necessary work unspecified is not the same as value from a simpler configuration. Ask for exclusions in plain language.
Keep the applicable Canadian warranty certificate, registration responsibility and labour coverage with the appraisal. No numerical reliability advantage is claimed here for FS or VS. A service provider’s local support evidence and clear installation record are more useful than an unsupported assertion that fewer features always means fewer repairs.
Before authorizing the order
For a side-by-side review, write one question beside every unresolved specification. A missing dimension is a request for a drawing, while a missing heating capacity is a request for the selected model’s performance data. Neither gap should be silently filled from a similar-looking furnace or a general brand description.
Cost, reliability & alternatives
Obtain a dated, itemized Canadian-dollar quotation identifying the exact furnace, accessories, labour, venting, drainage, electrical work, removal, permits where applicable, tax and warranty obligations. Compare the same scope; an unexplained large gap warrants another qualified opinion.
No defensible numerical reliability rank assigned.
