Furnace and heat pump: compare the matched system
A good furnace choice can depend on the outdoor unit and controls.
Specify the combination
A dual-fuel proposal should identify the furnace, outdoor heat pump, indoor coil and thermostat or control. A promise that equipment is “compatible” needs to distinguish basic operation from the advertised communicating functions. Ask which features work with the exact pairing and which require another component.
If you are retaining an existing outdoor unit, have the contractor describe the control plan and any performance limitations. A furnace upgrade does not automatically create a matched high-performance system. The relevant technical documentation belongs with the quote.
Compare operation and capacity
The heat pump’s available capacity and efficiency vary with outdoor temperature. The furnace’s role may include heating below a selected operating point or providing backup. Ask how those settings are chosen for local energy prices, comfort needs and the equipment’s capabilities.
The furnace must still have an appropriate heating capacity and airflow arrangement. Do not select the largest furnace simply because a heat pump is being added. The design should address both heating load and required airflow through the coil and ducts.
Keep rebates outside the base price
Ask for the full installed price before incentives, then list each proposed incentive separately with its eligibility conditions. Confirm current program rules, pre-approval requirements and the exact equipment combination with the operator. A product badge alone does not establish a payable rebate.
Compare the total scope with a furnace-only alternative if that is a realistic option. Electrical work, controls, coil replacement and commissioning can explain part of the difference. A second opinion should evaluate the system design as well as the headline price.
