Bungalow furnace choice: heat loss, ducts and installation workload
A single storey can have a large exposed roof and a long horizontal duct layout.
Heating workload: start with exposed surfaces
For the same above-grade floor area, a bungalow usually has a larger roof and foundation footprint than a stacked two- or three-storey example. That can make attic insulation and the condition of the basement or crawl space important comparison questions. It does not prove that every bungalow needs a larger furnace: construction, attached walls, windows, leakage and the heated basement change the result.
Include every space that the equipment actually heats. A real-estate floor-area figure may omit a heated basement. Ask the contractor to show the room loads and the selected delivered output, rather than assigning a furnace size from the word “bungalow.”
Air distribution and access
A long bungalow may have distant bedrooms or an addition at the end of a duct run. Record which rooms are uncomfortable and ask whether supply and return paths were assessed. A central thermostat can reach its target while a far room remains cool. A premium blower is not a substitute for identifying that distribution problem.
An open basement may make duct transitions and service access straightforward, while a low crawl space or finished ceiling can make similar work slower. Photograph and measure the actual route. A one-storey house is not automatically a low-labour job.
What can justify a higher quote
Ask for separate prices or scope descriptions for a return-air improvement, a long vent route, a condensate pump, electrical changes and difficult removal. If the expensive proposal includes these and the inexpensive one assumes everything can remain, their totals describe different jobs.
Compare a basic and upgraded furnace with the same installation scope. The upgrade should identify a useful change such as a lower heating stage or a control function, while the installation premium should identify extra work. Use the house-layout comparison and itemized quote tool to keep those reasons separate.
