Carrier is a useful starting point because its Canadian catalog separates entry, intermediate and communicating equipment. The meaningful comparison is the complete installed system, rather than the size of the logo or the highest efficiency number.

The Canadian range uses Comfort, Performance and Infinity names. Treat these as different equipment propositions, not three grades of workmanship. A proposal should explain what extra behaviour the next tier enables in this house: additional heating stages, airflow management, a communicating control, or diagnostic access. If the salesperson cannot connect an upgrade to an identified comfort problem, the premium remains unexplained.
A Canadian page still requires a model check
Carrier currently shows seven condensing families in its Canadian furnace selector. Even there, a family heading can disagree with a technical field, as seen on the 59TN7 page. Preserve the complete offered suffix, installation orientation and dated product sheet. The family maximum is useful for navigation; the certified configuration is the proper figure for a purchase comparison.
Separate efficiency from comfort
Two proposals can carry the same maximum AFUE while using different controls or blower strategies. Ask the installer to separate expected fuel savings from a promise of steadier room temperatures. A premium furnace cannot demonstrate that an upstairs room receives enough air merely by advertising a sophisticated motor. That question needs a duct and airflow assessment tied to the actual house.
Make the installation visible
Request a drawing or photographs identifying the new cabinet position, return connection, filter access, vent route and condensate destination. The comparison should state which existing components remain and why they are suitable. If an existing air conditioner or heat pump stays, require the proposed control arrangement in writing. A furnace-only price is not automatically a complete replacement price.
Reliability is a service question as well as an equipment question
Ask who performs winter diagnosis, which branch supplies the control board and blower assembly, and how warranty labour is handled. These questions do not prove a failure will occur; they reveal how a disruption would be managed. Keep the commissioning record, warranty certificate and installer commitment together so that a future technician has evidence rather than a sales summary.
Compare the premium in dollars
Carrier uses relative cost symbols on its catalog, not a Canadian installed price. Obtain the base alternative and upgrade alternative from the same written scope. Identify any control, electrical, venting or labour-warranty differences before judging the gap. If the premium is attributed to fuel savings, ask for the assumptions and the calculation. Neither a postal code nor AI can supply the missing house measurements.
The main comparison is modulation versus the two-stage Infinity alternatives. Ask the contractor what heating-demand pattern justifies the additional control range in this home. A higher tier should solve an identified comfort requirement, not merely occupy the top row of a brochure.
This is a two-stage Infinity comparison, not a modulating one. It is useful when a proposal seeks communicating-system functionality while avoiding the cost of the modulating family. Compare the selected capacity and control package with both the 59TN7 and a Performance alternative.
The 59TN7 illustrates why a comparison needs source notes. The manufacturer headline says up to 97.0% AFUE while one technical field on the reviewed page still says 96.7%. Use the current sheet and certificate for the quoted full model to settle the number.
The 59TP6 is a candidate for comparing two-stage heating without assuming the complete Infinity control platform. Ask whether the proposed thermostat supports the advertised functions and whether remote diagnostic access is optional. Permission to share operating information should be separate from agreement to buy the furnace.
This Performance family combines two-stage heating with a listed maximum 97% AFUE. It is worth comparing against the communicating Infinity 97 option because similarly named efficiency tiers can have different system requirements. Ask the dealer to explain the control architecture in plain language.
This model separates blower capability from burner staging. It is advertised with a single-stage gas valve despite belonging to the Performance range. Ask why the installer selected this arrangement rather than a two-stage option at the same required output.
Carrier’s basic condensing option is a useful baseline for a premium quote. The important question is whether a correctly sized single-stage installation meets the household’s documented needs. It should not be dismissed solely because another model has more elaborate controls.

Comparison basis
No verified current national installed CAD price schedule was found. Compare an itemized local proposal for the exact model, controls, installation work, tax treatment and labour coverage. A large unexplained gap deserves an independent second opinion after scope is normalized.
